AAMVA'S INTERNATIONAL REGISTRATION PLAN/IRIS FOR TRUCKS

Long range state/carrier negotiations have resulted in the International Registration Plan (IRP), the purpose of which is to implement the concept of one registration plate and one cab card (registration certificate) per vehicle. It grants exemption from paying certain fees when they are reciprocal, and privides for the continuance of reciprocity for vehicles not eligible for proportional registration under IRP. Negotiations between the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators (AAMVA) and the Federal Highway Administration have produced the companion software support system, and the International Registration Information System (IRIS). Currently, 26 states and one Canadian province are signator to the IRP agreement. IRIS Version I was designed to calculate all IRP fees, issue cab cards, recaps, and transmittals, as well as needed management reports. A new IRIS package, Version II is planned. This article gives details of the IRP.
