DEEP WATER PORTS: SOME LESSONS FROM FOREIGN EXPERIENCE
A recent survey of foreign ports being developed for ships above 80,000 dwt yielded lessons covering vessel characteristics, dredging and traffic control, harbor configurations (tidal vs locked basins, excavated ports vs natural sited, river ports and offshore terminals, sea islands vs single-point mooring buoys, mooring and fendering), and aspects of geology, current vs wave and wind, flexibility, and environmental protection.
