CARDIAC DAMAGE AFTER ROAD ACCIDENTS

Because of its weight and the proximity of its anterior surface to the sternal and costal chest wall, the heart is highly subject to injury during sudden decelerations. The anterior coronary arterial system is especially at risk when the heart comes in sharp contact with the chest wall or if the chest is stove in by steering wheel injury. Examples are given of the various types of damage which can occur following a road accident. (TRRL)
