VARDOE TUNNEL - AN UNDERSEA UNLINED ROAD TUNNEL NORWEGIAN STYLE

The design and construction of an undersea rock tunnel, to provide all-year-round communications between the mainland of Norway and the Island of Vardoe, is described. The single-bore tunnel being constructed to carry a two-way roadway, is 2800 M long, 8 M wide, and includes 100 M long concrete portals at each end to prevent snow blocking the entrances. Although a bridge was also considered, cost estimates showed that a tunnel could be constructed at lower cost providing risks concerning rock condition could be overcome. Horizontal holes were driven in advance of the face to give advance warning of faults and bad ground conditions. The excavated rock face is stabilised with rockbolts and lined with combined water shields and insulation to control leakages. (TRRL)
