TURBULENCE AND DRAG REDUCTION WITH POLYMER ADDITIVES

An investigation of the turbulence-damping properties of carboxymethyl cellulose, guar gum, and Polyox solutions without the influence of a solid wall involved the use of a submerged jet having two jets of widely differing size. The results agreed with earlier pipe flow results in which a large reduction in frictional drag was obtained. Tests on the flow of guar gum and Polyox solutions through pipes with rough bores, and some preliminary pipe friction tests with a mixture of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide and naphthol as an additive are also reported. The reduction of skin friction with polymer additives seems to involve at least two effects, depending on the additive and its concentration.
