PAVEMENT TEMPERATURE REGIMES IN AUSTRALIA: THEIR EFFECT ON THE PERFORMANCE OF BITUMINOUS CONSTRUCTIONS AND THEIR RELATIONSHIP WITH AVERAGE CLIMATE INDICATORS

Data on the temperature regimes in asphaltic concrete (ac) pavement structures and sprayed seal surfacings have been collected at six sites in Australia over a period of a year or more. The information obtained has been related to average climate indicators, to the field performance of bituminous surfacings, and to the structural performance of thick ac constructions. From data on the surface temperature regimes, the field performance of thin bituminous surfacings has been related to two average climate indicators. It was found that sprayed seal surfacings experience less severe high temperature conditions than the surface of ac layers. In thick ac structures, the temperature conditions over a year at a depth of 50 mm were found to be an indicator of the average temperature conditions over a year for the top 100 mm of the structure. The data have enabled a method to be developed to calculate the daily temperature regime in a pavement structure at any location when the sky is clear and wind speed is low (a).
