THE CONSEQUENCES OF A SERIOUS OIL CRISIS ON PUBLIC TRANSPORT
LES CONSEQUENCES D'UNE GRAVE CRISE PETROLIERE SUR LES TRANSPORTS PUBLICS
A study is made of the consequences of a serious oil crisis (large reduction in supply and rise in costs of raw petroleum) on urban travel in medium and large towns in France, except Paris, and of the possible measures available. The probable evolution in urban journeys, transfer to other modes (from private cars to walking, two-wheelers or public transport), and the influence of seasonal or hourly fluctuations are analyzed together with variations in results as a function of the initial part played by the supply of public transport services and the adaptation of the supply (capacity of the transport network as a function of the number of vehicles and staff available) during a crisis. A study is also conducted of the financial consequences for public services of the expenses arising from the eventual increase in the use of public transport. (TRRL)
