INDUCED LIGHTNING OVERVOLTAGES IN RAILROAD ELECTRIC TRACTION LINES
LE SOVRATENSIONI ATMOSFERICHE INDOTTE NELLE LINEE DI TRAZIONE ELETRICA FERROVIARIA
The principles of calculation of the overvoltages induced in an electric line by lightning which strikes the surrounding land are explained. The method makes it possible to take account of the effective configuration of the line, and of the plurality of power conductors and the presence of guard cables. The results of an application of the theory to the calculation of the intensity and the waveform of the overvoltages which can be induced by lightning in the railway electric tractionlines are given. The survey, carried out with the aid of a computer, has made it possible to determine quantitatively the efficiency of protection used against this type of overvoltage, both by earthing cables and ground wires. This survey has also made it possible to make a comparison between the different configurations of the traction lines from the point of view of induced overvoltages.
