THE "AACHEN JUMP-LIGHT" HAS PROVED TO BE A SUCCESS. THE LARGE SCALE EXPERIMENT "MORE SAFETY IN RESIDENTIAL AREAS" IN NORTH RHINE WESTPHALIA PROVIDES NEW EVIDENCE

SO HAT SICH DAS "AACHENER HUEPFLICHT" BEWAEHRT. DER GROSSVERSUCH "MEHR SICHERHEIT IN WOHNGEBIETEN" IN NORDRHEIN-WESTFALEN SETZT NEUE ZEICHEN

The town of Aachen took part in the large scale experiment "More Safety in Residential Areas". This involved installing a speed warning unit in an area of the town which became known as the "Aachen Jump-Light". In addition traffic signs were erected giving speed restrictions and indicating the residential area. Before the test measures were established, more than 40% of the drivers drove above 50 km/h. After detailed instructions were given to the citizens, it was established by radar measurement, that only 11% drove faster than 50 km/h and, after friendly written reminders to the fast drivers and the erection of signs, it reduced to only 5.4%. With the introduction of lights it reduced to 3 to 4%. The evaluations have shown that it is advantageous to let the jump light come on initially at 35 km/h and to set the radar unit in operation at 40 km/h. The accident figures in that area of the town have clearly reduced. (TRRL)
