TECHNICAL POSSIBILITIES FOR THE REALIZATION OF INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINES FOR MOTORCARS WHICH ARE ECONOMICAL AND HAVE LOW EMISSION OF HARMFUL EXHAUST FUMES

TECHNISCHE MOEGLICHKEITEN ZUR ERZIELUNG SPARSAMER UND SCHADSTOFFARMER VERBRENNUNGSMOTOREN FUER PKW

A reduction in fuel consumption and in the content of harmful materials is possible in different ways. In the forefront stands the optimisation of the mixture composition and the ignition unit. Diesel engines have advantages over otto cycle engines especially in the lower and middle ranges of engine speed and load. A reduction in fuel consumption of about 10% is possible if direct injection is used. Positive results are also given by high compression otto engines with weak mixtures, engines with stratified charges, carburettors with adjustable air funnel cross section, the luprade-carburettor and fuel pulverization using ultrasonic oscillators. The reduction in the warming up phase is possible by water pre-heating, exhaust heating and heating tubes. With the use of electronic components and better insulation materials improvements in ignition units are possible. (TRRL)
