AN INVESTIGATION INTO THE IMPACT OF CARS WITH UNDERRUN PREVENTION EQUIPMENT
UNTERSUCHUNGEN ZUM AUFPRALL VON PERSONENKRAFTWAGEN AUF UNTERFAHRSCHUTZEINRICHTUNGEN
Amongst the customary protective measures to prevent vehicles from driving beneath the til of a lorry is the underrun prevention beam which is fixed upon consoles to the frame side members. These beams fulfil their purpose only by having appropriate alignment and sufficient strength. By means of rear end impact tests and quasistatical force-deformation measurements the most favourable dimensions and strength values were ascertained. From these it was found that the maximum height of the lower edge of the beam should be 450 mm above the carriageway. Since by the impact of a car with a larry a total deformation of 900 mm can occur, the distance from the rear limit of the vehicle is correspondingly reglated. The static strength of the beam should amount to at least 150 kn at the linking console and 100 kn at the centre of the beam. (TRRL)
