HANDLING OF CARS WHEN BRAKING ON CURVES OF WET CARRIAGEWAYS

FAHRVERHALTEN VON PKW BEIM BREMSEN IN DER KURVE AUF NASSEN FAHRBAHNEN

The test procedures used on dry, level carriageways have now been employed on wet carriageways having skid resistance at the lower limit for ordinary roads. Furthermore the effect was shown of various levels of skid resistance on vehicle handling during braking on curves. In order to achieve the greatest possible vehicle reaction, not only the exit radius and the exit transverse acceleration were varied but also a number of other parameters such as braking force distribution, vehicle weight, tyres and shock absorber effectiveness. The investigations showed that the limit of steering susceptibility drops over-proportionally to a reduction in the skidding value. With small skid-resistance values the yawing stability worsens. Fundamental influence is exhibited by the momentary braking force distribution, tendency to understeer, lateral movement of the centre of gravity and the yaw inertial moment. (TRRL)
