INVESTIGATION INTO THE POTENTIAL FOR PLANTING AND GRASSING AREAS UNDER BRIDGES

UNTERSUCHUNG UEBER DIE BEPFLANZBARKEIT UND BEGRUENUNG VON FLAECHEN UNTER BRUECKEN

The possibilities for planting and grassing areas under bridges within the pannonian climatic region have been investigated. Grassing would eliminate the visually disturbing impression of these sterile areas and would to some extent replace stone paving. An inventory of the most important plants and plant groups below or close to bridges was undertaken, together with limiting factors for their growth, such as light values and soil composition under the bridges. It showed that soil factors such as nutrient content, soil type and water content are of significance. From a number of plants considered to be appropriate in the laboratory such as vinca (periwinkle), euonymus (spindle-tree), hypericum, sedum (stonecrop), in practice only ivy was suitable, which as an evergreen required little attention and quickly covered the ground. It was necessary before planting to treat the soil with a water retaining sub-strata such as composana and to water every second day for two weeks after planting. (TRRL)
