ESTIMATING THE MOMENT FOR SPREADING DE-ICING SALT FROM THE QUANTITY REMAINING ON THE CARRIAGEWAY

In the application of salt during the winter for the purpose of preventing icy road surfaces it is necessary to understand the conditions and the time after which a new spreading is required. To estimate the effectiveness of the dissolved salt the relation between salt concentration and lowering of the freezing point must be calculated for all situations likely to be met in practice. NaC1, CaC12 and mixtures of these de-icing salts have been investigated. Analysis of the remaining salt on the carriageway surface can be carried out by electrical conductance measurements. All known methods of salt measurement and the latest applicable measuring equipment were tested for practical application and the conductance measurement system was appropriately modified so that the connection between the conductance of a salt solution and its freezing point could be provided. From numerous test series on specific stretches of road, the salt distribution and its spatial and temporal changes were analysed throughout the winter of 1979/80. From these distribution curves it was possible to establish and analyse the most standard influence factors. The repeated and regular measurement of salt remaining on a road during the winter can contribute to the avoidance of unnecessary spreading and reduce the quantity of salt used without the care of the road sustaining any loss.
