INTERLOCKING CONCRETE BLOCK PAVING SEMINARS
This article summarises the information presented at seminars held in four centres in New Zealand, August 1981. The characteristics and performance of block paving have been investigated in Australia and South Africa using heavy vehicle simulators. Details are given of various features of paving blocks and bedding sands, of variables in sub-base materials, and of traffic characteristics which were investigated. Surface deformation, resilient deflection, and vertical compressive stress were the criteria by which the response of the concrete paving was evaluated. These test programmes led to scientifically based design methods for block paving, and reference is made to a number of case histories which have confirmed the sound basis of this technology. Recommendations of an interim design code for the use of all types of blocks for service up to medium traffic density are included. (TRRL)
