Most recently-built railway structures are made of prestressed concrete. The author describes a number of important structures built in this way and explains the features of a type of large viaduct adopted by the French National Railways and the measures taken to ensure its long service life. The special regulations laid down for the design and calculation of structures, their construction and subsequent maintenance are referred to.
