ACCEPTANCE CRITERION FOR SHEAR MODULUS OF ELASTOMERIC BEARINGS
The acceptance test requirements as detailed in the Indian specification for elastomeric bearings lead to anomaly for elastomer having hardness other than 60 deg. There are two tolerance limits, one based on percentage variation of shear modulus and other based on variation of degree of hardness, which indirectly controls shear modulus. It can be seen that for elastomer harder than 60 deg one tolerance limit based on degree of hardness governs, while for elastomer softer than 60 deg, the other tolerance limit based on percentage variation of shear modulus governs. Another anomalous situation is created as specifications give different sets of values for shear modulus for various values of hardness of elastomer, compared to one used in the design. In depth study also reveals that the values of modulus of elasticity adopted for compressive stress-strain relationship have been taken from another work, which gives again totally different sets of values for shear modulus. The tests conducted by the authors and others show that the relationship between shear modulus and degree of hardness due to gent is more appropriate and its adoption with plus or minus 15 per cent tolerance in shear modulus will eliminate the anomaly in acceptance tests as well as in design of elastomeric bearings.
