WHY ARAMIS? THE ATTRACTIVENESS OF URBAN TRANSPORT
POURQUOI ARAMIS ? OU L'AGREMENT DU TRANSPORT URBAIN
The aramis programme is a research programme undertaken approximately ten years ago in the field of urban transport on the initiative of the datar. The author attempts to find new reasons for justifying the continuation of this programme. The urban population want an individual transport mode that is comfortable and comparable to a car, but moving with greater regularity at peak hour, with less waiting time and less congestion. This wish led research towards a system of small cabs, based on a car, which would offer direct service with numerous stops. The aramis system seems to fulfil these needs. It consists of small vehicles travelling on small-dimension lanes, thus facilitating its integration and reducing construction costs and nuisance to frontagers. Single vehicles travel individually (each to its own destination) but are regrouped into trains for the major part of the journey outside origin and destination stations to ensure a better flow.
