MODAL ANALYSIS OF VEHICLE FUEL CONSUMPTION

Laboratory testing on chassis dynamometers using drive cycles which simulate city and highway patterns of vehicle use, currently offers the most consistent method for measurement of vehicle fuel consumption and emissions. Australian Design Rule 27B and Australian Standard as 2077-1979 both specify such a method. Knowledge of emissions and fuel consumption for individual modes of operation within the drive cycle is useful in developing a vehicle to meet emission legislation while simultaneously achieving a satisfactory fuel consumption. This paper describes a method of measuring fuel consumption during idle, acceleration, cruise and deceleration modes within the AS 2077-1979 drive cycle (a). The paper was presented as Paper 3-Session 1-B. Measurement of Vehicle Fuel Consumption (SAE 82133). The number of the covering abstract of the conference is TRIS no. 367871. (TRRL)
