IMPROVING PARENTAL ROAD SAFETY PRACTICE AND EDUCATION WITH RESPECT TO PRESCHOOL CHILDREN

After examining pedestrian casualties among preschool children in North West Europe and the behaviour and abilities of child pedestrians, the author concludes from accident reports and surveys that generally parents do not provide preschool children with adequate road safety instruction. A great variety of methods have been tried in Europe to encourage parents to give their children better road supervision and road safety teaching. These include television and radio campaigns, films, books and leaflets, and organized meetings. None appears to have been successful. Recently, however, two new types of scheme seem to have met with some success: traffic clubs for preschool children and the Tuebingen road safety training scheme. (TRRL)
