SPEED REDUCING MEASURES
FARTDEMPENDE TILTAK
This report contains a survey of different kinds of speed reducing arrangements. The focus is on geometric design and the effects for different kinds of road users and maintenance. Bumps, both circular and flat, reduce the vehicle speeds considerably. To keep the speeds low, the distance between the bumps should not exceed 50-75 M. It is an advantage to cyclists and simplifies the drainage, if a passage is left between the bump and the kerbstone. Otherwise it is normally necessary to build new gutter inlets. The bump can be cleared of snow with ordinary machines. It is also possible to reduce the vehicle speeds by reducing the width of the carriageway. The best result is obtained if the carriageway is designed in a zig-zag pattern. This design, however, makes the snow clearance more difficult. Rumble strips have only a small effect on vehicle speeds. They can be used to warn a driver of difficult spots. It has been the purpose to describe a wide variety of case studies in this report. The effects of the measures are different and more or less verified. (TRRL)
