FUEL SUBSTITUTES. AN INTERNATIONAL SURVEY

ALTERNATIVA MOTORBRAENSLEN. EN INTERNATIONELL OEVERSIKT

The most serious effect of the energy crisis may be a future lack of suitable fuels for the transportation sector. Large research programmes as well as other activities are therefore initiated in many parts of the world in order to develop substitutes for petroleum based fuels. Public and private organizations are involved in this work for which substantial amounts are allocated. Swedish knowledge of such activities is usually quite good, but there is no total survey available. In order to fill this gap, the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences has compiled information about programmes for the development of substitute fuels in a large number of countries, which is summarized in this report.
