TRANSPORTATION: DIRECTIONS FOR ACTION
This document gives consideration to the problems faced by disabled persons in the areas of seeking and obtaining employment, inaccessible public transportation, community-based residential facilities, barrier-architectural or environmental--which limit mobility, access to education and the lack of aids and support services to facilitate fuller participation in society. All modes of transportation are vital to the integration of disabled persons into the main-stream of community living. Any barriers to integration must be eliminated. Access to adequate transportation is often the deciding factor between being dependent upon family members or society and being able to function independently. Governments play the major role in providing funding for, and regulating, transportation; it is their responsibility to make transportation services more accessible to all members of the public.
