HEALTH AND HEALTH RISKS AMONG CITY BUS DRIVERS IN WEST BERLIN
This is an evaluation of a cross-sectional study of West Berlin bus drivers and administrative employees. The design of this occupational-medical study was the responsibility of the Berlin Transportation Company's (BWG) Medical Service. It included the medical examination of 811 bus drivers and 417 management employees in such areas as: physical examination, blood pressure, EKGs, x-rays, and analysis of blood. A questionnaire was administered including social circumstances, health behavior, illnesses, drug use, and psychological stresses. A survey of literature on the health-related stress among bus drivers and similar occupational groups forms the first part of this report. Other sections of this report include: 1) Results of the Cross-Sectional Study of BWG Bus Drivers and Administrative Employees; 2) Selection on the Basis of Physical Fitness in the Drivers' Group; 3) Summary of the Results of the Study; and 4) Tables and Charts depicting such items as behavior and health, medical history data, age and work structures, and education. Results indicate that severe occupational stress and its effect on health caused the majority of them (75 percent) to leave their job that the work world and health have on each other, but it also offers good suggestions for preventions and ways in which company doctors can expand their work in this direction. The second part of the project (UMTA-VA-06-0034-82-4) is the ergonomic field study. The field study pursues the objective of analyzing stress and strain in terms of routes, shifts, and specific deployment.
