MALADIES AND INDUSTRIAL HEALTH OF PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION WORKERS

This study reflects the view that the study of the maladies of the professional drivers of public transport vehicles can contribute to the knowledge of the pathology of the drivers of private automobiles-knowledge necessary for the prevention of road accidents as well as for the study of "modern malaria"-that is, people's widespread feeling of discomfort in the modern big city. The 11,000 employees of the public transport company of Rome (ATAC) provides the basis for this research. This report presents: 1) a description of the ATAC company and its personnel; 2) a discussion of worker absenteeism due to sickness and accidents; 3) a discussion of the difficulties, costs, and discomforts occasioned to the employees of ATAC (and the entire Roman population) by the urban traffic situation; 4) a discussion aimed at improving the working conditions, the occupational hygiene, and the health care of the public transportation workers; and 5) a description of measures to modify the present insurance coverage for occupational maladies. This report also provides proposals for further research regarding the health and working environment of the transportation worker.
