EVALUATION OF THREE DIFFERENT PUBLIC TRANSPORT SCHEMES AND THEIR COMPARISON WITH THE PRESENT SYSTEM IN THE CITY OF BARCELONA
Public transport objectives for Barcelona include: major use of the metro; better accessibility to the outskirts of the city; reduced travel time; improved bus regularity; and a new bus network not too different from the existing one. Three alternative bus networks (a grid system, a radial ring system, and a "magnetic force" system) were evaluated. Results showed relatively small differences between the proposed networks. Should a new fare system be approved, with combined or hourly tickets, the orthogonal bus network could be the most advantageous, bringing important changes in accessibility in the outskirts of the city. This paper was presented at the OECD International Symposium on Surface Transportation System Performance, Washington D.C. May 1981. (TRRL)
