METHODS FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF SHIPBOARD HABITABILITY DESIGN CRITERIA. MULTIDIMENSIONAL SCALING OF REAL AND SIMULATED ENVIRONMENTS

A data reduction technique, designed for the rating scale evaluation of a human shipboard environment, is described, tested, and demonstrated. The data from individual participants in each stimulus are assembled into inter-stimulus distance matrices for each rating scale. Input is made to Carroll and Chang's INDSCAL matrix decomposition procedure. Tests of the method include Monte Carlo simulation to assess recovery of input dimensions. A statistical test adequate to the assessment of recovery of each dimension was developed. Analysis and interpretation of sailor responses to ship's messing area illustrate the method and allow design implications to be drawn for materials, furniture, lighting, and other features.
