THE MANAGEMENT OF NUMERICAL CONTROL SOFTWARE AND ITS IMPACT ON THE OPERATION OF A SHIPYARD

The past five years have seen the introduction of N/C production machines into a number of United States shipyards. This use of N/C, in the shipyard, has had a significant effect on most existing methods and departmental organization. Although it takes a relatively short period of time to learn the basic coding for the production of N/C tapes, it requires considerable experience in the management of such N/C computer software systems to be able to setup an efficient computer-aided lofting group and to integrate it within the existing shipyard organization. The paper, therefore, attempts to provide some guidance on the essential requirements for management and control of a computer-aided lofting department. The major changes to other areas, resulting from the use of a computer-aided lofting system and N/C production machines, are discussed.
