THE APPLICATION OF MODEL TESTING TO THE DESIGN OF STINGERS FOR PIPELAYING BARGES
The need for pipelines to transport hydrocarbons from offshore deposits to refineries on the beach has expanded to deep, exposed ocean areas that were not contemplated a short while ago. Sophisticated new equipment has been developed to lay these pipelines. The CHOCTAW I and CHOCTAW II, sister semisubmersible pipelaying vessels are presently at work in the North Sea on a 36 inch diameter gas line from Norwegian waters to Germany. This paper deals with the general approach to designing a stinger for these vessels and how model testing is an essential part of such a design program.
