SL-7 CONTAINERSHIPS: DESIGN, CONSTRUCTION, AND OPERATIONAL EXPERIENCE
The design of a 33-knot containership can certainly be considered the design of a "prototype" in the commercial field. The series construction of eight of these ships in three different European shipyards for U.S. flag operation presented a unique experience for all involved. The fields of hydrodynamics, hull structure, and vibration presented challenges that were met with some new techniques; these techniques are briefly described. Some design failures have been revealed after operational experience, and these are described along with the overall performance of the SL-7.
