CHARACTERISTICS OF BULK PRODUCTS CARRIERS FOR RESISTRICTED-DRAFT SERVICE
The discussion of restricted-draft bulk carrier design is initiated with consideration of the objective of such design development and a brief review of current state of the art. A parametric study of maximum deadweight tank vessel characteristics is carried out, using a computer design program, for a range of drafts corresponding to existing U.S. port constraints. Restricted-draft and conventional tank vessel characteristics are compared with respect to geometry and costs. A dry bulk carrier preliminary design study, defining restricted-draft designs from 60,000 dwt to 200,000 dwt, is described, including the presentation of selected preliminary design drawings. Hydrodynamic characteristics of full-form restricted-draft vessels are considered with respect to resistance, propulsion, directional stability, and control. Selected interim test results of a new hull form series are reported. The existence of certain problem areas characteristics of the restricted-draft forms is recognized and required additional development work is discussed.
