WYOMING'S 1980 TRUCK ACCIDENT FACTS
During 1980 Wyoming truck-involved accidents decreased to 1760, a decrease of six percent over 1979. Truck accidents account for nearly 10% of the total traffic accidents for 1980, as they have historically in years past. Truck-involved accidents during 1980 include 46 fatalities and 788 injuries, a decrease from 74 fatalities and 901 injuries in 1979. The number of fatal truck accidents is the lowest in the last five years, including the lowest number of truckers killed since 1973; however, the percent of truck-involved accidents has been consistent, along with the same percentage of commercial vehicles on state highways. Since 50% of the truck accidents involve a collision with another motor vehicle and the size differential between trucks and late model cars has increased in recent years, the logical conclusion would be a higher number of fatalities in this accident type; however, the percentage of fatalities in this accident type decreased slightly in 1980. The data analyzed and presented in this report came from the individual's accident reports and the investigating officer's reports (city police departments, sheriff's offices, and the Wyoming Highway Patrol). It is intended that this data be used to recognize the circumstances surrounding the truck-involved accident.
