THE BENEFITS OF UNLEADED PETROL

Following recent government announcements it is now certain that unleaded petrol of around 91/92 research octane number will be introduced throughout Australia by July 1985. In addition, from 1 January 1986 most light duty vehicles will be required to meet reduced exhaust emission standards equivalent to those that applied in the USA in the 1975 and 1976 model years. Certain benefits will accrue from the use of unleaded petrol: (1) Lead emissions to the atmosphere from motor vehicles will be progressively reduced and eventually eliminated. (2) Unleaded petrol will allow the use of more fuel-efficient emission control technology based on the use of exhaust gas catalytic converters. With catalysts, gaseous exhaust emissions can be substantially reduced and the 1986 emission standards can easily be met, whilst at the same time permitting engines to be designed and tuned for improved fuel efficiency. (3) The use of petrol without lead additives, and without the associated scavengers, will extend the service life of spark plugs, engine oil and exhaust systems. Thus vehicle maintenance costs will be reduced. Nett costs are examined from the point of view of the motorist. It will be seen that the increased retail price of the vehicle will be recovered, through fuel and maintenance cost savings, within 2 to 4 years. Thereafter a significant nett cost saving will result. (TRRL)
