Air Navigation Report

This report from the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) updates the status of air navigation capacity and efficiency indicators for 2016, using as a baseline the previous analysis for the 2014 edition. There was an increase of 6.4% in the number of annual total passengers carried, compared to 2014. Low-cost carriers contributed to the overall growth in passenger traffic, carrying approximately 28% of total scheduled passengers. Jet fuel prices decreased almost 40% in 2015, which was one factor in stimulating global passenger traffic growth. Boosted passenger seating capacity was another factor, with available seat-kilometers rising by 6.1% globally. On the other hand, freight (air cargo) traffic only grew by 2.2% in 2015, which is less than half the 4.9% growth rate for 2014. It was expected that airlines would finish 2015 with another record operating profit of approximately 60 billion US dollars and an operating margin of 7.6%. The numbers for 2014 were 42 billion US dollars for operating profit and 5.5% for operating margin. Other topics covered in this report include: regional targets and achievements; global air navigation priorities; fuel and CO₂ savings from the implementation of Aviation System Block Upgrades Block 0 modules; and recent ICAO developments, including aviation frequency spectrum requirements, rationalization of terrestrial navigation aids, digital exchange of meteorological information, and the proposals constituting Amendment 13 to Annex 14 - Aerodromes, Volume 1.
