Concept and Framework of the New Generation of Smart Highway

The rapid growth of the highway system empowers humans to travel between cities fleetly. The new generation of the smart highway (NGSH) has become an irresistible global trend. The exploration of the definition and framework for NGSH can guide us to upgrade the current highway system. This paper summarizes the fundamental features of the NGSH based on the interactive development history of the automobile industry and road transport, which is oriented by the promotion of service capability. Given the evolution of automated driving and connected vehicle, the primary technical components of the NGSH are proposed as full-range integrated perception, digital twin representation, cooperative vehicle-infrastructure applications, and high-speed communication. The corresponding physical framework and digital data flow are introduced, in which three data attributes are considered (data accuracy, dimensionality, and freshness) to describe the data requirements under various scenarios. The development path of the NGSH is further discussed in terms of the different driving automation levels. The characteristics of five levels of smart highways are identified from R0 to R5. Different combinations of NGSH level and vehicle automation level lead to distinct systematic functions. Several urgent problems in the current stage are pointed out from the perspectives of system compatibility, standard specification, and information security. The research provides new insights for sustainable and reproducible highway reformation, drawing some implications for NGSH design.
