Prediction Model for Paint Pavement Marking Retroreflectivity Deterioration Rate
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the use of Grey Prediction Model (GPM) in predicting the deterioration rate of paint pavement markings retroreflectivity. In addition, Grey Relation Analysis (GRA) was used to evaluate factors that significantly affect degradation patterns of the retroreflectivity. The factors considered in this study are Average Annual Daily Traffic (AADT), initial retroreflectivity readings, elevation, and the number of lanes. The study-utilized data collected across the state of Tennessee. Using 100mcd/m²/lux as the threshold below which the markings are considered for repaint, study found white paints take approximately 2.7 years to reach 100mcd/m²/lux while yellow paints takes approximately 2.0 years to reach the same threshold. Varied per AADT levels (low, medium and high traffic volumes), it was found the paints deterioration rates increase with increase in traffic volumes. The findings from GRA showed that the initial retroreflectivity value is the most significant factor compared to elevation, number of lanes and AADT in affecting the degradation rate of white paint markings. The elevation was found to be the most influential variable for the yellow markings degradation compared to other evaluated variables. The study findings can help in planning and scheduling the repainting of paint pavement markings for acceptable retroreflectivity values.
