Implications of Converting Low Capacity Intersection Adjacent to Park Into a Shared Space
Shared space infrastructure has been gaining traction in the recent years due to its benefits to safety and aesthetic allure to pedestrians. Increasing traffic safety is important, hence studied often, however it is not well explored which intersections could be converted to a shared space from the aspect of traffic performance. This paper aims to fill this gap and studies the traffic performance parameters involved in the conversion of low capacity intersection, adjacent to a park are, into a shared space. The choice to study the intersection adjacent to the park is intentional because these types of intersection should already have similar performance profiles to shared spaces, which will be shown in the paper. Video data collection is made on an exemplar intersection and the trajectories of traffic participants are extracted from the video using semi-automated video analysis. Next, the same area, just converted to a shared space, is designed in a microsimulation. Performance differences, travel distances and speed profiles, are analysed. With their analysis the authors show that there are no downsides to a conversion of such intersection into a shared space.
