The Future of Technology in Asphalt
Technology has made many functions simpler and more efficient, and many industries have adapted and thrived because of the benefits that new developments have brought. If paving contractors and owner agencies refuse to change antiquated and inefficient methods and procedures, improvement in the quality of roads cannot be expected. Intelligent Paving technologies offer advanced monitoring solutions for continuous, comprehensive, and real time quality control and quality assurance of asphalt paving projects. In addition, Intelligent Paving technologies aid in properly designing and constructing pavements thus saving money on maintenance and premature failures while improving the overall quality and lifespan of new asphalt pavements. This paper discusses the different Intelligent Paving technologies of intelligent compaction to monitor and improve compaction, paver mounted thermal profiling to measure thermal segregation, dielectric profiling to measure compaction, 3D modeling and automated machine guidance to improve roadway design and construction, inertial profiling to measure smoothness and delivery monitoring and automated ticketing to optimize the paving operation and provide digital tickets for material deliveries.
