Case Study of Average Daily Usage of Nonroad Equipment Fleets

The objective of this case study was to collect and analyze real-world activity data from a variety of nonroad vehicles and equipment in order to update and improve the NONROAD model. The United States Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) MOtor Vehicle Emission Simulator (MOVES) is a modeling system that estimates emissions for mobile sources at the national, county, and project level. The NONROAD module in MOVES calculates fuel consumption and emissions of over two dozen pollutants for every county in the United States. The majority of NONROAD source data dates back to the model’s first public release over twenty years ago and do not account for the impacts of large-scale economic trends or regional differences; thus, new data are needed to update the model. The research team collected and analyzed real-world daily usage data from five nonroad equipment fleets, including one privately owned fleet and four publicly owned fleets. Results indicate that there are differences in daily, monthly, and seasonal usage patterns for nonroad equipment which are easily identified. Although more data are needed, this case study provides an example of the analyses that may be performed and the insights that may be gained when real-world equipment data is acquired.
