AUTOMOTIVE FUEL ECONOMY IMPROVEMENT

Fuel economy improvements, attained to date and projected between 1980 and 1985, are discussed. The data, projections and judgements are limited in most cases to General Motors products. The prospects are favorable for continued gains beyond 1985 that include changes in both technology and product mix and entail considerable economic costs. The development of synthetic fuels promises to be cost effective and to require no drastic changes in transportation hardware.
