Dynamics Simulation-Based Safety Evaluation for Highway Geometric Design
An evaluation system which comprehensively considers the multi-factors of driver, vehicle, and highway elements, can objectively reflect the operation state of the road. The paper established a simulation system based on comprehensive consideration of driver-vehicle-highway system (DVH). The true operation status of vehicle was simulated using vehicle dynamics software ADAMS (automatic dynamic analysis of mechanical systems). By reverse study to the sensitive indexes, highway geometric design parameters could be safely optimized. The purpose of simulation was to find out the sensitive indexes of vehicle dynamics parameters that affected driving safety. A simulation case showed that six dynamics indexes were sensitive to the changes of curve radius, including lateral acceleration, roll angle, steering wheel torque, and steering wheel angular velocity, yaw rate, and sideway force coefficient. Finally, highway geometric design can be achieved by calibrating thresholds of dynamics indexes and safety evaluation.
