ASSESSMENT OF U.S. NUCLEAR MERCHANT SHIP PROGRAM
The recent steep rise in bunker fuel costs, coupled with the dramatic increase in size and power requirements for world merchant shipping, have caused renewed interest in the nuclear merchant ship program. There has also been a growing realization at senior levels of government in Washington that nuclear powered ships could be of substantial help in reducing the need for oil imports to fuel U.S. merchant ships, thereby easing the balance of payments and the U.S.'s increasing dependence on foreign sources of supply.
