THE EFFECTS OF TRAFFIC RESTRICTIONS ON RETAILING. A STUDY MADE IN SIX SWEDISH CITIES
TRAFIKANTERNAS INVERKAN PAA DETALJHANDELN. EN STUDIE AVE SEX TRAFIKANTERNAS
The purpose of the study is to analyse the effect of traffic restrictions on retailing in city centers and to study the possibility for the retailer to influence these effects. A number of studies have been accomplished in cities of different sizes and with different kinds of traffic restrictions. A survey has been conducted among all the stores in the city centers of these cities totalling 1059 stores. Many retailers have a negative experience of traffic restrictions. 43% think that traffic restrictions have had negative effects on their stores while 20% think that the effects have been positive. The retailers that have had a negative experience are most eager to accomplish adjustments. The results of the study indicate that traffic restrictions for the most part do not have negative effects on retailing. These results concern in particular one-way streets, pedestrian streets, automobile traffic prohibited on Saturdays only and prohibition of through-way traffic. restrictions. (TRRL)
