TANKER TANK CLEANING RESEARCH PROGRAM

This report presents the findings of an 18-month evaluation of crude oil tankship tank cleaning and related operations. Data from industry surveys, shipboard studies and laboratory investigations were used to provide a state-of-the-art review and to develop recommendations/guidelines that will increase the safety of tank cleaning operations, reduce the oil pollution of the oceans and reduce the cost and effort involved in tank cleaning. Major report sections review and evaluate equipment and operational procedures employed in tank washing, slop separation and handling, and tank atmosphere control. Specific findings emphasize the importance of training of tanker operational personnel. Guidelines for improved training programs are provided, as well as recommendations for further research and development.
