MODIFICATION OF THE NCHRP 117 NOISE PREDICTION MODEL FOR USE WITH THREE SPEED DEPENDENT VEHICLES TYPES

This report transmits the results of an effort to modify the standard NCHRP 117 highway noise prediction method in its computerized form to a model using three noise source vehicle types. The modified 117 utilizes the auto, the medium truck and the heavy truck as noise sources with corresponding speed dependent noise emission levels. Based on a comparison with measured field data from sites in Florida used in the four state FHWA highway noise study, the three vehicle model is seen to predict L sub 10 and L sub 50 values which are in closer agreement with the measured field levels than are corresponding sound levels predicted by the standard two vehicle 117 model.
