Technology Revolutions: Bringing Tomorrow Here Today

After a century of activity by the Transportation Research Board and others, transportation is experiencing several technological revolutions driven by research performed over multiple decades including: alternative fuel vehicles, automation and autonomous vehicles, communications, artificial intelligence and data analytics, and new modes of transportation. In this article, the authors explore these technological revolutions in transportation and their impacts on a wide variety of industry sectors that are experiencing near- and longer-term impacts: car rentals, supermarkets, wildfire fighting, and local government transportation.
