Automatic Braking Cuts Crashes for Large Trucks: Study Shows Front Crash Prevention Works for Large Trucks Too

This article reports on a study, recently undertaken by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), that found that equipping large trucks with forward collision warning and automatic emergency braking (AEB) systems could prevent more than 2 out of 5 crashes in which a large truck rear-ends another vehicle. The author describes the study, then discusses the problems associated with large truck crashes. Other topics include the regulations regarding crash prevention technologies, both in Europe and the U.S.; voluntary commitment on the part of U.S. automakers to include front crash prevention features in large trucks; the benefits of front AEB for passenger cars; the use of data compiled by SmartDrive Systems, a video-based safety program for commercial fleets; and potential benefits of these technologies beyond the reduction in crashes.
