Simple Infrastructure Changes Make Left Turns Safer for Pedestrians

This brief article describes some basic structures to the infrastructure, particularly at signalized intersections, can reduce risks to pedestrians. For example, the use of centerline hardening can make intersections safer for pedestrians by reducing the speed at which drivers make left turns. The left turn path is outlined with bollards and rubber curbs. The article summarizes the findings of a recent study that investigated the success of centerline hardening and other traffic calming strategies as implemented in Washington, D.C.
