Maximizing Pavement Life Over the Years

This article summarizes many of the differing approaches to maximizing pavement life over the years. The author goes back 50 years, to when the Asphalt Institute introduced full-depth asphalt. In early days, pavement maintenance was not undertaken as regularly as it is now and unmaintained cracking had a big impact on maintenance costs and ride quality. The author then describes two case examples – in South Dakota and Minnesota – that cover how modern pavement management and rehabilitation are handled. The remainder of the article proposes the use of balanced mix design for the future of pavement performance measurement and success. One chart captures the interplay of pavement distress design variables.
