Study of Environment & Railways: Complementary Approach
As per NITI AYOG, carbon emission from Indian Railway is -6.84 million tons while road transport contributes 123.55 million tones (18 times). Emission intensity of Indian Railway (kgCO₂/Passenger-km) is 0.007837 for passenger traffic Non-Suburban, 0.007976 for passenger traffic Suburban and 0.00996 for freight traffic (kgCO₂/Ton-Km). Apart from CO₂, NOₓ and PM pollution for every ton-mile a truck is 3 times that of a locomotive (US-EPA study). Railways are 3/12 times more energy efficient in passenger/freight transport. But still rail sector is yet tot ravel some distance to call itself pollution-free. This paper analyses all nine aspects of greening the highways. The reason why environmental conservation and improvement in Railways can't be done unless all nine areas are dealt with simultaneously is that it's a moving system. Pan India presence, thousands of trains daily and 13 million employees creates multivariable problem which can't be solved in isolation. Imagine a bucket with nine holes, how can we expect conservation without plugging all nine?
